Lets save the Earth

A couple of days ago I saw a colleague of mine print a project requirement document spanning over 100 pages. My first reaction was to ask him why cant he read the document on his laptop. There is absolutely no need to print such a large document. This sparked a discussion on the use of paper. There are still a lot among us who like to read the documents/books the old orthodox style, print it-hold it-feel it-read it. I agree it may give a different feeling but we all should also be more responsible to the changing world. Our every indifferent action is making the earth more warm.

One very important perspective about climate change that I find is people who are the least responsbile for it are suffering the most. We drive in air-conditioned cars, work in air-conditioned offices, sleep in air-conditioned homes, thereby consuming maximum energy but hardly feel the heat and burn. Whereas, there are a lot of people who are bereaved all such amenities but sweat the whole day under the sun (street vendors, rickshaw pullers, construction workers etc.) and then at times also sleep even without a fan on the cieling. I wonder why are these people suffering most the effects of Global Warming when it is us who are the Maximum contributor to it.

On my recent trip to Nigeria where I was part of the IBM Corporate Service Corps program I was really amazed and impressed with some of my colleagues. They are so passionate about changing the world and making every small step count towards Global Warming. The experience taught me that we should do away with our indifference and believe that our every small action counts. I have changed and made it a point to change my way of living as much as possible in favor of Mother Earth. There are a lot of things which all of us can do in our individual capacity.

I have started:

  • Saying no to Plastic Bags, whenever not required.
  • Switching off lights/electrical appliances when not in use.
  • Changing bulbs with CFL.
  • Restricting the use of paper.
  • Switching to ebill instead of paper bills for my utilities.
  • Once in a while take a bucket bath instead of shower.
  • Half open the tap to save water.
  • Spread the message.

For me the next steps is to start:

  • Segregating waste
  • Use energy efficient electrical appliances
  • Fix all dipping taps and faucets

I am sure you can do the same...

P.S.: While walking out of the Office I still see a lot of monitors switched on even though people have left for home. Sad.
